Yoki Sun is a Vancouver artist focusing on dynamic abstract paintings using mixed media. Her work is generally on canvas and utilizes paper, found objects, acrylic paint and pens to create beautiful pictures. Yoki’s works are often playful, sometimes serene and contemplative but always powerful and assertive.
Yoki’s artistic free spirit is reflected in her frequent use of newspapers, magazines and other print materials to create unique ways of using objects to develop original artistic expressions. Her paintings can be loose, almost floating, yet at the same time highly structured often creating a sense of mystery.
She has travelled widely in Asia, Europe and North America to observe art in many different institutions and galleries. It has emboldened her to think that art is everything, art is everywhere. She has taken her unique power of observation to the canvas to create works that are strikingly bold and powerful in a satisfying, refreshing, original way.
Yoki has been significantly influenced in her expressions by her friendship with her mentor, Gordon Smith who has been instrumental in drawing out her love of creating art. He has helped her to develop her knowledge of historical art and encouraged her to discover her own abstract impressions of her life experiences.
